School leaders must be aware of the renewal status for their staff and work to assist each person in completing this process. During my residency I worked along side the assistance principal to guide our teachers through the professional development process. Using the attached document, we were able to guide teachers through requesting and managing their own Professional Development in My Learning Plan. We empowered the teachers to become active participants in their own career advancements by providing this type of instruction and support throughout the year.

Serving as Beginning Teacher and Mentor Coordinator during my residency reminded me of my reasons for entering school leadership. This opportunity allowed me to support, develop and provide feedback to our new teachers and to learn from those serving as mentors. Through monthly meetings I was able to discuss topics relevant to new teachers and experienced teachers alike and allow both groups to share and learn from one another.

Conducting formal and informal teacher observations is a duty and a responsibility of school administrators. I was familiar with the process from my own evaluations and participating as a Peer Observer. My residency allowed me to work with my principal to complete the process as an administrator. One observation I completed during my residency was used for an assignment in our Human Resource Management course. This assignment asked that I complete the entire observation process with a teacher and capture the post conference on video. This assignment required me to stop and reflect on each component, the pre-conference, observation, and post conference, which allowed me to internalize the importance of each step. In videoing the post conference I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses and work to improve my post conferencing techniques.
