STANDARD SIX
External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.

During my residency and through COVID19, I had the opportunity to see crisis response of the state, district and school from the inside. We quickly learned new verbiage in our attempts to find and help create a new normal for our staff and students. We including words like social distancing, pandemic, teleworking and herd immunity to our everyday language. Johnston County Public Schools did an amazing job keeping principals, teacher, parents and students informed as plans were made daily and weekly as the pandemic progressed. In an attempt to bring comfort to our teachers and the community we serve, we arranged a parade of love through our neighborhoods. Using Social Media and word of mouth we were able to spend about 3 hours on Friday March 27th going into the neighborhoods of our students bringing cheer to them and their families during this unprecedented crisis.

The school executive designs executive protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state and district mandates.
Adhering to State, Federal and District mandates is the responsibility of the school leader. During my residency I was tasked with making sure that all teacher assistants completed background checks. Congress passed this federal mandate in 2016 and it required all covered public school staff to complete a criminal background check as of September 30, 2019. For East Clayton this meant that all staff working with our Pre K must adhere to the mandate. My job was to walk our staff through this multi step process designed by the Division of Child Development and Early Education. This process included leading staff to create NCID accounts, complete an online questionnaire, assisting in coverage to allow the staff to go to the courthouse for fingerprinting and acquiring reimbursements for personal money invested.
The beginning of the school year is often filled with school and district mandates. This is the time for leaders to make sure that all employees have a clear understanding of the expectations set by the school and the district. Johnston County Public Schools requires leaders to present all updates to policies during the beginning of the year meetings and to document that all employees have been presented the material. Each employee is required to complete a Policy Assurance Form via DocuSign. Since the material was being presented to the faculty and staff as a whole, I designed a process for collecting the completed forms. All faculty and staff completed their form on a chromebook and the chromebooks do not have print capability. It was necessary to create a shared Google folder for the staff to drop the completed forms in making it simple to check and track its completion. The image displayed documents the collection of Policy Assurance forms in the folder and manner I created.
