Managing resources and budgeting for a school year are enormous undertakings for school leaders. During my residency I was able to see just how big those tasks are and how leaders approach them. This past year year I participated in the Assistant Principal Institute(API) sponsored by Johnston County Public Schools. API is a two year program offered to first and second year AP's. In this program, the assistant principals are developed to one day move to the principal seat. One session this year addressed all things budget for Johnston County Public Schools. I found the session very informative and needed. In my 30 year teaching career I had never heard of budget codes. Other opportunities to demonstrate my knowledge of school budgets were the Budget Simulation on Assessment and the Comprehensive Recommendations for Benson Middle School Budget Project. Both opportunities allowed me to demonstrate my understanding of the dispersal of funds and the accountability of managing resources.

A weekly newsletter that outlines needed information for the upcoming week is one way school leaders communicate with faculty and staff. My principal mentor would allow her administrative team to give input and assistance in crafting this newsletter every week. The newsletter would include links to important information and resources teachers could access for use in the classrooms and in PLCs.

Leaders must ensure that there are rules and protocols in place enabling schools to run at an optimal level. One of my first tasks during my residency was to review the Faculty and Student Handbooks of East Clayton. I developed a working understanding of both of these documents which enabled me to communicate their contents with the staff, parents and students. Leaders must revisit these documents each school year to ensure their relevance and importance for stakeholders.
